The Football Association is in a race against time
Iraq’s national football team is facing an organizational crisis ahead of the start of preparations for the 2026 World Cup amid conflicting local league deadlines and the team’s training schedule amid concerns from Australian coach Graham Arnold’s technical staff over delays in local players joining training camp.
The Iraqi Star League competition has seen a heated battle for the title between the Iraqi Police Club and the Iraqi Air Force Club in recent rounds, which has cast a shadow over the national team’s arrangements and complicated the task of the technical staff in preparing the roster ahead of the upcoming international competition.
According to media reports, the technical staff is facing open difficulties with the local players before the start of the training camp, after it was decided to end the Iraqi league on May 28, that is, just 24 hours before the friendly match against the Andorra national team on the 29th of the same month.
“Ultra Iraq” website noted that coach Graham Arnold expressed his displeasure with the current schedule, believing that this period does not give the coaching staff enough opportunity to prepare the team, physically or technically, before the friendly match.

This narrow time frame puts the technical staff in a difficult situation, as it does not give enough time to gather the players, implement tactical plans or achieve the necessary harmony before entering the crucial preparation phase.
In this context, Arnold asked the Iraqi Football Association to advance the start date of the pre-season training camp one week before the match, with the aim of allowing enough time for the players to prepare optimally.
However, this proposal clashed with the desire of some clubs to keep their players until the end of the local league competitions, led by Al-Shorta, which includes 4 players nominated to join the national team: Ahmed Basil, Manaf Younis, Ahmed Yahya and Mustafa Saadoun, which increased the concern of the technical staff about the delay in the recruitment of key elements.
Intense talks are currently taking place between the Iraqi Football Federation and the Police Club administration in an attempt to reach a compromise that will ensure international players join the national team camp in time for the friendly against Andorra.
