Newcastle: Dan Byrne on therapy, mental health and helping others

“There are things going on in their careers that they’ve never experienced, so I just try to impart a little bit of wisdom.

“I always try to say that there are ways you can deal with mental health. Therapy has worked pretty well for me

“That doesn’t mean it works for everyone, but things like that, walking football — there’s always something you can do to help each other and help yourself.”

Byrne said he was “very proud” of his journey, being released Newcastle As a young man and leave Fulham In 2016.

He earned his first England call-up last year and hopes to make the squad for this summer’s World Cup.

“I’m desperate to be there,” he said. “It’s not like it’s going to come around again.

“I’m 34, so I’d be very surprised if I was in the running for the next World Cup.

“Hopefully I did enough. We’ll find out in a few weeks.”

Countries have to submit their World Cup squads by May 31.

Co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, the tournament runs from June 11 to July 19.
