Iga Suitek dropped just one game past Elisabetta Cocciaretto to set up an intriguing Italian Open fourth-round meeting with Naomi Osaka.
Poland’s Swatek is the best clay-court player of this generation, with four of his six Grand Slams coming at the French Open.
However, the world number three has not claimed a clay title since his last Roland Garros win in 2024.
After parting ways with coach Wim Fiset, who helped him win Wimbledon last year, Swatek has teamed up with Francisco Roig, former coach of the great Rafael Nadal.
And the 24-year-old showed glimpses of his best in a 6-1 6-0 demolition of home hope Cocciaretto in 67 minutes.
Suetek, a two-time Rome champion, won 76% of her points on her first serve and lost just six points on her second serve.
She will now face Japan’s four-time Grand Slam champion Osaka, who has had an impressive few weeks despite not being natural on the surface.
