Kelly said this week’s visit will be “highly symbolic” and will focus on “renewing relations with China and prioritizing cooperation and fairness to restore America’s economic independence”.
Trump’s visit, which was planned earlier this year but it was suspended in March because of the US-Israeli war on Iran, it comes as the US president struggles to stop the fallout from the war, at home and abroad.
A senior administration official told reporters at an unannounced meeting on Sunday that Trump “could put more pressure” on China on Iran in areas such as oil sales and Tehran’s purchase of military equipment.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent last week he criticized China about “money” Iran.
“Iran is the biggest sponsor of terrorism, and China has been buying 90 percent of their energy, so it’s funding terrorism,” Bessent told Fox News.
Iran shut down Hormuz River in response to the US-Israeli attack, blocking passage through an important international energy corridor.
China has said it wants to see the war end and to cause Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Arraghchi last week. At the same time, Beijing has refused to recognize Washington’s “unreasonable” sanctions on Iran’s oil sector.
The turmoil from the war has disrupted economies around the world, and Asian countries which depends on goods from the Middle East especially the most difficult.
Trump could also bring China’s support for Russia into the talks, as well as trade and rare earth minerals, which are critical to the US technology sector. Business executives from aircraft manufacturer Boeing and a few agricultural companies are expected to travel with the US delegation.
The unnamed official said no change was expected in the US position on Taiwan, a key point in relations between Washington and Beijing. China considers the self-governing island part of its territory, but the US has deep security and economic agreements with Taiwan.
