Israeli attacks are on the rise in southern Lebanon, where 552 people have been killed since a ‘ceasefire’ began on April 16.

Lebanon’s Ministry of Health says Israeli airstrikes in the past 24 hours have killed 51 people, including two medical workers.

“The enemy of Israel continues to violate international and social law, adding more cases to surgical patients, as they directly targeted the two points of the Health Authority in Qalawiya and Tibnin, in the province of Bint Jbeil, in two groups,” said the ministry.

The ceasefire, brokered by the United States, is in its third week.

The ministry said 2,846 people have been killed across the country since March 2, when the Israeli army began a new military operation.

Since then, the United Nations has reported that at least 103 medical workers in Lebanon have been killed and 230 injured in more than 130 Israeli incidents.

“We are in danger every second, every day,” Ali Safiuddin, head of the Lebanese Civil Defense in Tire in southern Lebanon, told Al Jazeera. “We wonder if we will survive or if we will die, we know that we have already lost our lives because of working here.

Al Jazeera’s Obaida Hitto, reporting from Turo, said that “international humanitarian law is clear: medical workers and first responders, such as the Lebanese Civil Defense, must be protected during armed conflicts, but in this line, the question is not whether another hit is coming.

Dr Tahir Mohammed, a military surgeon and aid worker who works in Gaza and Lebanon, told Al Jazeera that he sees similarities in what Israel is doing in both areas.

“We used to see our friends in Gaza coming to the door all the time. I’ve had friends, nurses, medical students killed by Israeli weapons, so to see the same process of targeting medical workers in Lebanon… it’s normal,” he said.

“If Israel had their way, they would have all the southern areas of Lebanon, and they will do it tomorrow. They will not live. I have seen it with my own eyes,” Dr Mohammed added.

Israel’s offensive has displaced more than 1.2 million Lebanese since March 2. Despite a ceasefire that went into effect on April 16, violence has only increased.
