Trossard made a late move as Arsenal beat West Ham, edging closer to the title | Football News

Winger Leandro Trossard scored the only goal of the game as Arsenal survived a VAR dispute to win at West Ham.

Arsenal overcame the most dangerous obstacle remaining at the top of the Premier League by the skin of their teeth as Leandro Trossard’s late goal earned them a 1-0 win at West Ham United to restore their five-point lead on Sunday.

The visitors were in danger at the London Stadium, but Trossard headed home from Martin Odegaard’s pass in the 83rd minute to spark a frenzy among the Arsenal fans.

Arsenal were fortunate and survived a major stoppage-time threat when West Ham substitute Callum Wilson equalized for a foul after VAR.

The victory put Arsenal on the verge of a first Premier League title since 2004, and they will be champions if they win their last two home games against Burnley and Crystal Palace on deadline day.

Arsenal have 79 points from 36 games while Manchester City, who have a game in hand, have 74.

For West Ham, it was a bitter pill to swallow as the defeat left them staring at the drop, and they can move four points from safety with two games remaining if Tottenham Hotspur beat Leeds United on Monday.

If Arsenal go on to lift the title, a stoppage-time incident that Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville described as “the biggest VAR call in Premier League history” will be a long-lasting detail against Manchester City.

But it could prove to be a big problem for West Ham, who should have been awarded a point on display.

With the clock ticking away and despite West Ham keeper Mads Hermansen rising for a corner, the ball broke to Wilson, who shot through a forest of legs and over the line.

West Ham fans went wild, and maybe Manchester City did too. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta looked stunned, but after VAR told referee Chris Kavanagh to look for a possible foul by West Ham substitute Pablo on Arsenal keeper David Raya in the build-up, the stadium was left silent.

He came back to announce that the goal had been disallowed and Arsenal could breathe a sigh of relief.
