Arsenal and their fans were treated to some scary, dramatic moments at London’s Olympic Stadium when they narrowly pulled off a valuable win against their London neighbors West Ham United in an exciting Premier League Round of 36 match.
Long suffering and a late goal
The Gunners went into the game fully aware that winning their remaining three matches was the only way to clinch the Premier League title they’ve been chasing for years, but West Ham proved it wasn’t going to be easy.
Arsenal struggled to penetrate the Hammers’ organized defense for long periods before Belgium’s Leandro Trossardi broke the deadlock with a late goal in the 83rd minute to delight the fans.
Last minute drama
But the joy was not complete as in stoppage time, specifically in the 90th + 5th minute, West Ham managed to surprisingly equalize to the dismay of Arsenal fans who saw two valuable points drop in the closing moments.
VAR saves the “gunners”.
But fate was in Arsenal’s favor this time as the match referee decided to go back to Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology to review the goal and it was revealed that the West Ham forward had committed a flagrant foul on Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya just before scoring.
After moments of anticipation and intense tension, the referee officially declared the goal disallowed, so the Gunners fans could breathe easy and celebrate a valuable victory (1-0) that almost eluded them in the final moments.
A big step towards a title
With this difficult victory, “Arsenal” continues to lead the standings of the English Premier League, and it separates the current champion “Manchester City” by 5 points, knowing that the “city team” played one match less.
