Semi-Final: Warrington Wolves 12-32 Hull KR

Hull beat Kingston Rovers Warrington in the semi-finals to set up a big Wembley clash with Wigan Warriors.

The title holders, easily hit by injury and hot under the wire, led 14-0 in the first 25 minutes through James Batchelor and Joe Burgess, before Mikey Lewis converted both and added a penalty.

The Wyres had given themselves a toe in the game through a Ben Currie try, but the Robins’ strong defending and pace of play proved too much for the Wyres’ determination.

Oliver Gildart’s crucial first try of the second half, Lewis’ penalty and Burgess and Batchelor’s second tries, Sam Stone’s late goal was instructive for the Walleyes.

Rovers have emerged as the in-form Super League side at Doncaster’s Eco-Power Stadium, winning six in a row in all competitions after a disappointing start to their Super League title campaign.

In that tournament they faced a leading run-rushing Wyre side and despite losing key players George Williams, Kai Taylor-Wye and James Harrison to injury, they managed to win four of their five games in all competitions.

However, the Robins have hit the kind of form that saw them sweep all before them last season and add the World Club Challenge to their honors list in February.

Batchelor started the pressure from the start, hammering a Josh Thewlis mistake over the wire before slipping through a gap in the defence.

Thewlis freed himself to try to save from Burgess but the Robins were unstoppable as Lewis added a free-kick and Burgess curled a stunning acrobatic finish in the corner as Wolves conceded a series of penalties under heavy pressure.

Getting to half-time without further damage looked to be the aim for Warrington, but they showed enough spirit to get back into the game as Mark Snee collided with Lewis and Jack Broadbent at the last tackle and Currie was delighted to pounce on the loose ball.

The first try after the break was always going to be valuable and both teams were locked in a tense arm-wrestle and it was the Robins when Gildart crossed.

Two successful captain’s challenges by Rovers brought Rhys Martin a penalty and Warrington’s resistance was broken and Burgess added another try in the corner.

Stone pounced on Matt Ashton’s kick to give the Wyres fans something to cheer about as the Robins emphasized their dominance as Bachelor first kicked a grubber from the excellent Tyrone May.
