South African Garrick Hugo was denied a share of the club lead at the US PGA Championship after arriving a minute late in the first round.
The 27-year-old Higgo carded a double-bogey six on the opening hole, but recovered with four birdies in Aronimink’s strong round of one-under 69.
At around 12:45, Hugo would not have been penalized for landing at the top of the leaderboard with South Africa’s Aldrich Potgieter completing the lap.
Race officials said Higgo was “not in the area designated as the starting point at the start time.”
“I’ve always cut it really well and it was really cold this morning,” Haigo, who was still practicing on the putting green, told Sky Sports.
“I don’t want to go to the tee 10 minutes early and be cold when I have to hit a driver.
“I usually hit five putts before I go to the tee and I go there thinking I have five minutes – but I obviously don’t.
“I thought I heard my name and I hit a putt. My caddy was yelling and I ran.”
Had Higo been five minutes late, he would have been out of his second men’s swim of the season.
Higgo was due to leave the Pennsylvania course at 07:18 with the American pair of Shawn Mitchell and Michael Brennan.
Higgo arrived seconds after one of his teammates was told he was fined by a law enforcement official for hitting the car early.
Asked if he was conflicted by the decision, Hugo said: “I didn’t say anything – I knew I had to prepare myself.”
“I said I’d fix it later.”
At the end of his round, Hugo was seen discussing the matter with the PGA of America in the clubhouse – but the penalty was not overturned.
