Year after year, more Americans buy Toyota RAV4s than any other non-car. The brand’s reputation for solid reliability has kept it ahead of SUVs from other automakers, and the brand’s embrace of SUVs and crossovers has dropped the poor old Camry to just under 10. For the latest generation — the sixth since 1994 — all RAV4s are electric. Many will use internal combustion engines and brakes to recharge their hybrid powertrains, just like the millions of Priuses out there on the road. But there’s also the option of a plug-in hybrid EV, with all-new powertrains that look pretty good in comparison The outgoing PHEV.
As Toyota designers and engineers have tried to improve on the previous RAV4 and each successive generation, their colleagues in the powertrain department have also been repeating and improving the combination of electric and piston engines. Under the hood is a 2.5 L four-cylinder engine that works on the Atkinson-cycle, with the help of variable valve timing on both intake and exhaust sides.
The engine, which independently produces 186 hp (139 kW) and 172 lb-ft (233 Nm), is connected to one of two electric motors under the RAV4’s hood, as well as Toyota’s electronic ratio transmission.
