The White House has clashed with Argentina players who celebrated with a “Las Malvinas son argentinas” (The Malvinas/Falkland Islands are Argentine) banner after their 2-1 World Cup 2026 semi-final win over England, defending the players’ right to raise it.
Andrew Giuliani, head of the US World Cup organizing committee, said at a press conference that Argentina players “can make similar statements” inside the United States.

Giuliani relied on the First Amendment to the US Constitution on freedom of speech, which states: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof, or abridging the freedom of speech or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble and to petition the government,” the paper wrote. “L’Equipe” French.
The stance comes as the British government called for an International Football Association (FIFA) investigation into the incident amid controversy over the Falkland Islands issue.
The dispute has its roots in the 1982 war between Argentina and Britain on the archipelago in the South Atlantic, about 600 km off Argentina’s coast, which killed 649 Argentines and 255 Britons in 74 days.
Since the war ended in its defeat, Argentina continues to claim sovereignty over the islands.
On the other hand, the controversial banner appears to be in breach of FIFA regulations, which prohibit any display or message of a political nature inside stadiums during the tournaments it organizes.
