Google doesn’t specify what the usage limits are for the free version — it just describes them as “standard.” You then get 2x this “standard” limit on the AI Plus plan, and 4x on the AI Pro plan. AI Ultra limits are 5x or 20x higher than those on AI Pro, depending on the premium level you are paying.
All users have access to all versions of Gemini AI, including Flash-Lite, Flash, and Pro. As you progress through these models, they become smarter and more computationally efficient. Each type also has different “thinking” levels-Standard, Expandedand Think Deeply-which also affects responsiveness, speed, and user experience.
The last difference between these models is the size of the window. Basically, this shows how much information you can include in a single conversation. For free users, the information window is 32K tokens (small words) – about 24,000 words. For AI Plus users, it goes to 128K tokens (about 96,000 words), and for AI Pro and Ultra users, the limit is a million tokens (about 750,000 words).
While the new rules regarding the use of AI may be lacking in detail, it’s easy to see where you stand. In the Gemini web app, click on the cog icon (top left) then Application limits; in the Android or iOS mobile app, click the menu button (top left), then the cog, then Application limits.
You will see two bars. The top bar shows your current usage, which refreshes every five hours. If you go through this, you have to wait before you come back; the Gemini app tells you when to recharge.
The second bar is your weekly limit, which you can expect, it resets every week. (Again, this will be shown on the screen.) If you exceed this limit and are on a paid plan, you will be demoted to an AI model, which you can continue to use until the next update.
You will, without a doubt, see ads to promote your AI plans on the application screens. It’s also worth noting that Google’s support documentation says that the limits can change without notice, due to issues – and that free users may be affected first if Google has to manage its AI tools.
