The goalkeeper who stole the limelight and is looking for a new challenge after the World Cup
Fosinha didn’t need to lift the World Cup to become one of the biggest stars of the 2026 World Cup. In the space of a few weeks, the Cape Verdean goalkeeper went from a player away from the limelight to a global phenomenon, with the press scrambling to interview him, while his social media following grew to tens of millions in a unique story that went beyond the green rectangle. Despite everything that has happened, the veteran goalkeeper insists that fame has not changed his personality and that he still clings to his humility and his dream to continue playing at the highest level.
Fossinha arrived at the World Cup as Cape Verde’s goalkeeper, and left the tournament one of the most famous faces in the world. In a short period of time, he went from playing out of the spotlight to being featured in photos, giving interviews to international media and amassing millions of followers on social media platforms.
Despite this great transformation, Fuzinya confirms that fame has not changed anything in his personality, and he said in statements to the newspaper:Brand:Spanish. “Fame has not changed me much, and I must remain myself.”
The goalkeeper’s comments came at the FIFA Legends Championship at Rockefeller Center in New York, which featured a number of world champions and stars crowned in the European Champions League, as well as names that have made football history over the past decades. Despite that whole constellation, many fans were looking for one man in particular, the Cape Verde goalkeeper.
The story of glory began during the World Cup match against Spain. Before the game, Fosinha only had around 50,000 followers on Instagram, but his remarkable performance against Spain changed everything.
In a matter of days, his follower count jumped to around 14 million by the end of the tournament, surpassing 28 million, making him the most followed at the World Cup, surpassing even Norway’s Erling Haaland. Today, the number of his followers has reached about 29 million.
“Before the tournament, we said we were from Cape Verde, but 90% of the world’s population didn’t know where it was. Everyone knows Cape Verde now, and that’s extremely important to us.”
Fusenia recalled his memories in front of the Argentine national team, stressing that it was one of the most beautiful moments of his career.
“The game against Argentina was great. We were tied until the end of the game and had chances to win. It was a great moment for me and the Cape Verde national team and we showed the world that we have a lot of quality.”
That match also gave him the opportunity to achieve one of his biggest dreams, which was to face the Argentinian legend Lionel Messi. He added smiling. “Messi is a player who needs no introduction. For me he is the best in the world. He has been playing for over 20 years and it was a pleasure to face him.”
Despite the huge popularity he has achieved, Fosinha does not want his fame to be turned into a mere marketing tool.
The goalkeeper confirmed. “I want to play football for one or two more years, maybe three years. I’ll see how my body reacts, but I’m a free agent and I’m looking for a good project, and I hope to find a suitable team soon.”
He explained that he does not want to join any team because of the media hype that accompanied his brilliant World Cup, but he is looking for a club that believes in his goalkeeper’s potential, values his experience and gives him the chance to continue competing.
Fosinha has been linked with a move to the American Football League recently, with Inter Miami also reported to be interested in his services, but the goalkeeper has denied any deal has been made so far.
When asked directly about the possibility of his move to Inter Miami, he simply replied: “I don’t know.”
