Brendon McCullum’s departure as England’s Test head coach has left the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) with a huge gap to fill ahead of a crucial home Ashes series next summer.
McCullum took over in the spring of 2022 and quickly restored confidence in England’s Test team, winning 11 of his first 13 matches. But a disappointing 4-1 Ashes defeat to Australia, followed by eight defeats in the team’s last 12 Tests, ended the ‘baseball’ era and left England searching for a new red-ball coach.
Names have been written in his place from home and abroad – but who is running?
Former coach of Australia Justin Langer Most likely will feature at the top of the list.
Langer recorded 15 wins, 11 losses and 5 draws during his time in charge of the Baggy Greens, with Australia retaining the Ashes on British soil in 2019.
Langer has been out of the international limelight since the beginning of baseball but has been in charge of Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL since July 2023, as well as a brief spell managing the London Spirit of the Hundred in 2025.
He is someone who knows the English domestic game well, having played for Middlesex and Somerset in the County Championship as a player.
Former England captain Andrew Flintoff He is the current coach of the England Lions and has recently stepped up to help with the white ball duties.
He will be a ready-made internal campaign for the ECB and will require little transfer knowing the talent at his disposal.
Flintoff has maintained a close friendship with England men’s managing director Rob Key since their playing days, giving the pair a long-standing relationship and an established working dynamic.
If appointed, the first thing on his agenda is likely to be deciding who he wants as the next Test captain.
The ECB may also need some talks after the former all-rounder agreed last month to become the new head coach of Sydney Thunder in Australia’s Big Bash League.
A New Zealander out, another in?
Former Black Caps captain Stephen Fleming He was McCullum’s teammate during his illustrious Test career where he averaged over 40 with the bat.
The 53-year-old stepped down as head coach of Chennai Super Kings on Monday after an 18-year association with the franchise as both a player and coach, which also included a record five IPL titles.
Like many others, another one who will be familiar with the county formation from his time playing for Middlesex, Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire, who led them to the County Championship title in 2005.
Surrey’s head coach Gareth Batty The same bracket can also be thrown into the ring.
Batty led Surrey to three consecutive County Championship titles in 2022, 2023 and 2024 and boasts an impressive coaching record under director of cricket Alec Stewart, who is among the names mentioned as a possible replacement for Rob Key.
Another former England off-spinner who knows the player pool well either directly coaching them or how to make them better as opponents, he is led at the Oval by current England players Jamie Smith and Matt Fisher as well as former Test No.3 Ollie Pope.
Former England batsman By Jonathan Trott Bottable’s most recent role was as head coach of Afghanistan earlier this year.
The 45-year-old stepped down after the World Twenty20 and recently took up a short-term role as a consultant for the series against his former employers with the Ireland men’s team.
Trott will certainly be a significant departure from McCullum’s style for those who remember his gritty and unruly innings at No.3 that helped England climb to world number one.
But he is one who has made a significant impression in his relatively short coaching career, leading his Afghanistan team to the semi-finals of the 2024 T20 World Cup.
Mickey Arthur He has experience at the international level having coached Australia, Pakistan and Sri Lanka in addition to his native South Africa for the past 20 years.
But the current Derbyshire head coach may prefer to stay out of the limelight and continue his hard work over the last five years.
He signed a new two-year deal with Derbyshire in February, but could be tempted by a high-profile return to the Test arena.
Former Australian batsman and head coach Darren Lehmann also falls into the same category as the current Northamptonshire coach.
Working in Lehmann’s favor is the fact that he masterminded two Ashes series wins against England just over a decade ago.
This came before his tenure in charge of Australia came to an abrupt end amid the sandpaper-gate scandal involving former captain Steve Smith and batsman David Warner, which resulted in the former being stripped of his Test captaincy.
Given England’s recent off-field struggles, hiring a controversial figure like Lehmann seems unlikely.
One man who will not replace McCullum is the former England head coach Andy Flower.
Zimbabwean The Test team had previously led the way as they were ranked number one in the world and secured a famous Ashes series win in 2011.
But the current London Spirit and Royal Challengers Bangalore head coach has confirmed he has removed himself from the controversy following discussions with men’s cricket director Rob Key.
He told reporters on Friday, “I have spoken to the ECB.” “We are all aware of the vacancy.
“I’ve spoken to Rob and ECB about it. The most important thing for me is that I’m very happy with the job I’m doing at the moment.”
Flower, 58, spent five years in charge of the England Lions before enjoying a series of successful coaching roles on the T20 franchise circuit, including leading RCB to back-to-back IPL titles.
