On the day release, I got up early and drove 25 miles to suburban Philadelphia to see Christopher Nolan. The Odysseyat one of the few movie theaters in the Northeast equipped to show large, high-quality screens 70mm IMAX films.
I arrived and found groups of unemployed people “NOLAN” sweatshirts and Letterboxd father hats move their weight, grorousing outside the theater. The power was gone. And 8 am show The Odyssey must be resolved. Stressed employees hand-wrote the ticket numbers for refunds (while the computers were working again), and handed out vouchers, apologetically. Moviegoers moaned about not being able to see the film, as intended, for so long – and wasting a day’s PTO. A thought crossed my mind: Maybe it was destructive?
Threats against Nolan’s adaptation of the Homeric epic have plagued the movie, ever since it was announced. Another group of right-wing Internet users – approved and expanded by at least Elon Muskon his echo chamber social media platform—they’ve been dragging their feet against the video, and the amount of public interest. For many silly reasons-the singing of Black and trans actorsor Matt Damon like the wise Odysseus; and Americanized English; and vintage train drawings; the fact that Tom Holland Says “Dad” in the trailer—many had written The Odyssey removed, visible-invisible, as less than a “psycho” designed to destroy “western culture.” One X user mocked Nolan as the enemy of the “west.”
Although similar positive reviews (The Odyssey currently has a 96% Critic’s Score on Rotten Tomatoes) was considered part of a “he raised a conspiracy.” Odyssey’s self-appointed enemies conspired against each other download movie trailersand they often campaign against watching the movie.
But there was no attack at the King of Prussia Regal Cinema. The local power grid map shows similar outages across the region, due to recent weather conditions. And I was told that this movie, in particular, had been suffering from blackouts in recent weeks.
Taking several hundred in the morning, the movie soldiers left the multiplex, with several thousand dollars in theater expenses, to strike. The Odyssey is shaping up to be a huge failure. Advance ticket sales—including IMAX screenings sold out nationwide—it shows 200 million dollars worldwide. This could be done a very profitable opening for any Christopher Nolan movies that don’t have a Batman character. Resale markets you’ve seen $1,000 tickets—to see a movie! It wouldn’t be surprising if The Odyssey it clears a billion dollars, worldwide, when all is said and done.
People are quitting their jobs to watch the movie. Diehards crossing state lines, and the borders of the world, to watch this movie on the biggest screen possible.. The news spread earlier this week of a California woman who delayed her pregnancy to avoid ruining the opportunity to see the movie, this weekend, in IMAX 70mm. I traveled for an hour and changed to arrive no to see it.
The difference between anti-Odyssey Going back and forth about the film, the organic fandom is revealing. Despite the best efforts of some of the worst people in the world, you cannot suppress the human desire to see big shows, on big screens, fight giant monsters and sleep with witches. You can vote down the cart. But you can’t download the dreams of many moviegoers.
