Vance defended the agreement the US reached last month to end the war with Iran, adding, “I know without a doubt that there have been people in the Israeli government who are trying to, like, get us out of this agreement because they want to continue the military operation.”
Vance, who many see as a possible future president, has criticized Israel for what has been spreading between the two countries.
“There is a real foreign campaign that was put in place to achieve what I wanted,” Vance told Rogan, referring to a report published by Time Magazine on Monday, which said that the former Trump campaign manager was hired on behalf of Israel to conduct a digital campaign to influence US opinion on Israel and Iran.
“You’ve seen this clever, well-funded campaign to try to derail the negotiations and try to derail the deal,” Vance said.
“There are certain people in their system that we know without a doubt who are manipulating and trying to change the minds of the American people so that the war will continue forever,” he added.
Al Jazeera’s Patty Culhane, who is based in Washington, DC, said that the Israel-related campaign that Vance is referring to may “want to appeal to Trump’s MAGA (Make America Great Again) base”, which is deeply divided over US policy on Israel.
“This is why Vance went on the Joe Rogan podcast,” Culhane said. “(Rogan is) one of the most popular musicians in the country and is a very important voice in attracting the guys who make up the MAGA group.”
The US vice president also said the campaign against Israel targeted him in his negotiations with Iran.
“People are brutally attacking me because I want to achieve the goals that the President has planned for the country,” he said.
Vance acknowledged that allies and adversaries both want to influence US policy, and said, “It doesn’t bother me that Israel is trying to do that.”
However, he said, “What worries me is when those activities, the influencers, really affect the thinking of American politics.”
Vance defended the U.S.-Iran deal reached last month, which sought to end the war, but has run into problems. great opposition in Israel.
The deal seems to have gone awry escalating attacks on the US and Iran during the last week.
Asked if he thought the US would have been involved in the latest war with Iran had it not been for Israel’s influence, Vance said, “Yes, I do.”
“I think the president, independent of any Israeli influence, believes very strongly — and I agree with that — that Iran should not have nuclear weapons,” Vance said.
Vance is he has previously criticized Israel’s critics of the Iran deal, saying in June that US President Donald Trump is Israel’s only ally, in a powerful rebuke that described billions in US military aid to Israel.
Former Israeli ambassador Alon Pinkas said Vance’s latest comments were “unprecedented” and showed the US and Israel were “not on the same page” at the moment.
“No US vice president has publicly accused Israel of waging a campaign to undermine American policy,” Pinkas, now a New Republic columnist, told Al Jazeera.
“There have been disagreements in the past, there have been conflicts. But for the vice president to come out clearly, clearly, and aggressively against Israel’s campaign against the US is unprecedented,” Pinkas said. “It’s amazing.”
Al Jazeera’s Culhane also said Vance’s comments “did not make sense”.
Alone, Vance weighed down the argument around the convicted Jeffrey Epstein, alleging that Epstein had high-level ties to the US and Israeli law enforcement agencies.
The Israeli government has not responded to Vance’s claims.
