The Open 2026: England’s Dan Brown cautions mid-round cigarettes to avoid fire risk

Emergency services have been declared incidents in North Wales, Derbyshire, Hampshire, Durham, West Sussex, East Sussex, Devon and Somerset over the past week due to wildfires.

The R&A has not banned smoking at Birkdale, which is hosting the 154th Open Championship over the next four days.

But everyone attending the event – including players, staff and spectators – is asked to dispose of last cigarettes safely.

Many professional golfers have been known to smoke on the course, including 1995 Open champion John Daly, Spain’s Miguel Angel Jimenez, who was famous for his love of cigars, and England’s Charlie Hull.

Brown said he turned to smoking when his “stress levels rose” on the course, but joked that he had to apologize to his mother for the habit.

He also revealed that he asked his father to stop smoking when he was young – then started doing it himself.

Although Brown seemed sheepish about the practice in his post-round press conference, his ability to remain calm allowed him to post the joint-leading score early in the morning.

Brown recovered from dropping fourth shots with birdies at the eighth and ninth, before shooting five more shots on the back nine to equal South Korea’s Im Sung-jae in 66.

However, American Jackson Suber battled the windy conditions to lead the clubhouse at five under.
