Ukrainian officials said the capital Kyiv had come under heavy Russian threats as missiles landed in several districts, triggering explosions.
Writing on Telegram early Thursday, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said emergency services were battling a fire across the capital after a warehouse in Sviatoshynskyi district and a residential building in Darnytskyi district were hit.
He said that the debris from the falling missiles also hit the non-residential development of Darnytsia, causing additional fires.
The Air Force Command in Ukraine later confirmed that the threat had been neutralized after about an hour.
This happened a few hours after European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen visited Kyiv and announced a “new agreement” between Ukraine and the European Union. The agreement aims to combine Kyiv’s military expertise with the EU’s industrial expertise to establish joint projects and rapidly expand production.
Speaking on the occasion of Ukraine’s Statehood Day, von der Leyen stressed the need to “join our forces”, saying that the alliance “will bring Ukrainian wisdom and industrial growth to Europe”.
He added that the EU could offer many benefits to Kyiv, including “great technology and industry” along with “safe and secure areas” to support the project.

More than four years since Russia invaded Ukraine, the escalation of conflict between both sides in the past few months has led to civilian casualties.

Russian attack in the afternoon it mainly affected factories and hospitals, targeting the Black Sea port of Odesa and the eastern city of Sumy, which is close to the Russian border.
