Controversies are intensifying as the start of the World Cup approaches
The president of Iran’s football federation, Mehdi Taj, has issued a new harsh criticism of FIFA after returning from Turkey following the Toronto airport crisis.
Canadian authorities did not allow Taj to enter the country to participate in the FIFA conference because he was a former member of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, which Ottawa considers a terrorist organization.
Accordingly, the remaining members of the Iranian delegation retreated and returned to their country through Turkey.
In this regard, the Iranian news agency Tasnim quoted the words of Taj. “I have never seen FIFA act so weakly.”

Taj accused the International Federation of being subjected to political intimidation, referring to FIFA’s failure to take action against what he described as “insulting and humiliating Iran”.
The head of the Iranian Federation emphasized that it is necessary to prevent US President Donald Trump’s interference in sports affairs related to the 2026 World Cup.
Taj believes that the Iranian team does not need any “green light” to attend the world forum, as he said: “Trump is not able to decide whether Iran will participate in the World Cup or not… To participate in the tournament, you don’t need permission from Washington.”
Trump recently said that he does not see a problem with Iran participating in the World Cup as long as FIFA President Gianni Infantino wants it.
Iran’s national team will play in the seventh group of the world championship with Belgium, Egypt and New Zealand on American soil.
