Janic Ciner beats Arthur Fils to reach Madrid Open final

World No. 1 Jannik Cena remains on course to win a record fifth Masters 1,000 title after beating Arthur Fils in straight sets to reach the Madrid Open final.

The Italian won his 22nd straight match to reach Sunday’s final, where he will face second-seeded Alexander Zverev or Belgian Alexandre Blokx of Belgium.

Sinner, 24, won the first three ATP 1,000 events of the season – in Indian Wells, Miami and Monte Carlo – and also triumphed in Paris late last year.

A win in Madrid would see him overtake Novak Djokovic, who has won four consecutive Masters 1,000 titles three times, and Rafael Nadal, who claimed four consecutive events in 2013.

Cena became the fourth player – and the youngest – to reach nine Masters 1,000 finals, joining Djokovic, Nadal and Roger Federer.

The Italian became the third man after Federer (2006) and Nadal (2011) to reach the final of the first four Masters 1000 events of the season, while his win meant he became the first player born in the 2000s to record 350 tour-level victories.

The four-time Grand Slam winner broke twice in the first set 6-2 against the 21st-seeded Phils, who won the clay-court Barcelona Open two weeks ago.

Fils, 21, led 3-2 in the second set after saving two break points, but Cena eventually broke to go ahead 5-4 and take the match 6-2 6-4.

Zverev and Blox play their semi-finals later on Friday.
