Video: Deadly drama. Egypt Cubs take revenge on Morocco to win African Nations bronze

Egypt’s under-17 team ended their participation in the Africa Youth Cup of Nations by winning the bronze medal, defeating hosts Morocco with two unanswered goals in the third-place match.

The encounter remained balanced and close for a long time in light of mutual caution between the two teams, until Mohamed Al-Sayed scored the first goal for coach Hussein Abdel Latif’s men in the 32nd minute.

The events of the match took a dramatic turn in the last meters of the second half. As the home side looked to equalize, they awarded a penalty in the 96th minute and after reviewing the VAR technique, the referee decided to continue the game.

Then Ahmed Bashir scored the second goal of the Egyptian national team at 90+12 minutes, confirming the victory of “Little Pharaohs” and taking the third place.

The victory gave Egypt a positive end to a highly contested tournament after they waved goodbye to the race to qualify for the finals after losing to Tanzania on penalties in the semi-finals, while Morocco finished fourth despite entering the tournament as one of the most popular title contenders on home soil and among fans.

The two teams had previously met in the group stage, where Morocco topped Group A with a 2-1 win with 7 points to 4 points over second-placed Egypt.

During the tournament, the Atlas Cubs also managed to overcome Cameroon in the quarterfinals before falling to Senegal in the semifinals.

Despite missing out on a medal, Morocco came out of the tournament confirming they had a promising generation that caught the eye throughout the competition, while the win gave Egypt a vital morale boost ahead of their appearance at the U17 World Cup finals.
